류지안(Jian Yoo)의 작업의 시작은 정형화된 프레임에서 벗어나 자유로운 시각을 표출하고 가치를 재생산하는 본질에 있다. 그는 전통-현대, 자연-인공, 인간-기계, 이상-현실 같이 대비되는 것들의 경계를 허물고 공존시키며 하나의 세계를 구축한다. 그리고 자개는 이러한 조화로움을 상징하는 매개체이자 동시에 보이지 않고 잡히지 않는 비물질적 빛을 보이게 하고 만질 수 있는 물질로서 시각적 질감을 이끌어낸다.

"재료 본연의 성질과 본질에 대한 탐구는 나를 들여다보는 시간과도 같다. 나를 둘러싼 수많은 관계 맺음과 시간의 흐름 속에 일렁이는 고요한 역동적인 에너지를 작은 조각들로 풀어놓는다."

틀에 얽매이지 않고 자유로우면서도 나름의 질서 속에서 작가는 작은 조각들에 개별성, 주체성을 부여하며 나와 너, 우리를 둘러싼 시간과 관계를 엮어간다. 제각기 다른 길이와 크기의 선과 면들을 서로 맞붙이고 연결하여 완성한 레이어는 높은 밀도로 작품 속에 침윤하며 시간성과 연결성을 완성한다. 이는 재료와 재료를 만지고 다루는 사람, 보이지 않는 시간의 축적 등 물리적, 비물리적인 많은 요인들이 상호 작용하여 작품을 완성하는 작가의 작업 방식과도 연계된다.

그는 추상과 구상, 공예와 미술을 분리하지 않으며 특정한 것에 얽매이거나 경계를 구분하지 않는다. 하나의 형식보다 회화, 오브제, 아트 퍼니처와 같은 다양한 매체를 활용하는 작업방식은 오히려 그를 도전하게 하고 매체들 간의 연결성을 만들고 공유하며 작품세계를 확장하게 하는 동인이 된다.

Jian Yoo constructs a world in which the boundaries of contradictions, such as tradition-contemporary, natural-artificial, human-machine, and ideal-reality, are broken down to coexist. And the mother-of-pearl serves as the medium that symbolizes this harmony, while simultaneously bringing out visual texture as a material that allows the invisible and untouchable non-materialistic light to be seen and felt.

“In Between” Her world of art is based on the diverse perspectives that she, herself, discovered and experienced being in between different environments and cultures. It is like a journey of guiding opposing relationships to complementary ones to form as one.

Her works reveal a kind of brilliance that can only be realized when thousands and thousands of small glimmers of light come together to form a whole. With the material being brought from nature, the artist focuses on respecting its unique qualities, while also highlighting them.

She doesn’t separate between abstraction and conception, craft and art, nor does she get tied down to any specifics or establish boundaries. Rather than using just one form, working with various media, like painting, objects, and art furniture, actually challenges her, creates and shares a connection between the mediums, and becomes the motivation to expand her world of art.
