이우환은 대한민국의 조각가, 화가이다. 일본의 획기적 미술 운동인 모노파의 창시자이며, 동양사상으로 미니멀리즘의 한계를 극복하여 국제적으로 명성이 높다. 주요 작품으로는 〈선으로부터〉(1974), 〈동풍〉(1974), 〈조응〉(1988), 〈점에서〉(1975), 〈상응〉(1998) <관계항(Relatum> (2010)등이 있다. 이우환의 작업을 보면 철판과 돌을 쌍으로 놓아둔다든지, 큰 붓으로 물감을 묻혀서 화폭에 찍는다든지, 붓에 물감을 묻혀 물감이 나오지 않을 때까지 선을 긋는 작업을 반복한다든지 하는 작업이 많다. 철판 : 돌이나 물감 : 화폭의 관계에 서로 만나는 관계를 대응시키고, 이를 현상학적으로 해석하라고 던져 주는 식인 것이다. 적어도 작가 이우환 본인은 작품이 이론적인 지식이 있어야만 감상할 수 있는 것은 아니라 여기고 작품을 만든 것이다. 사실 미술 작품은 자신이 느낀 바에 따라 감상하면 그만이다. 다만 이우환이 미술이론가로 활동하며 작품에 그런 이론을 담았고, 그 이론에 비해 작품이 외형적으로 상당히 단순하게 생겼기 때문에 대중은 그를 어려운 작가라고 인식하는 것이 사실이기도 하다. 이우환의 작업에서 관계가 중요한 주제로 떠오른 것은 아무래도 오랜 이방인 생활에서 비롯된 것으로 보인다. 이우환은 시골에서 서울로, 그 다음에는 일본으로, 또 미국과 유럽 등지로 계속 이동하면서 작품 활동을 해왔기 때문에 자신을 드러내기보다도 서로 다른 것을 연결하는 중간자로서의 역할에 보다 관심을 두어 왔다고 본 것이다.

Ufan Lee is a sculptor and painter of South Korea. He is the founder of the groundbreaking Japanese art movement 'Mono-ha (物派)' and has gained international recognition by overcoming the limits of minimalism with Eastern thought. Ufan Lee's artworks often involve placing metal plates and stones side by side, applying paint with large brushes onto canvas, or repeatedly drawing lines with a brush dipped in paint until the paint runs out. The relationship between metal plates and stones, as well as between paint and canvas, is juxtaposed to be interpreted phenomenologically. At least according to the artist Ufan himself, his belief is that his works don't necessarily require theoretical knowledge to be appreciated; in fact, one can appreciate art based on what one feels. However, he has infused with these art theory in his work, and due to the apparent simplicity of his works in comparison to the theories he embraced, the public often perceives him as a challenging artist. Ufan Lee considered 'Relationship' as the main theme because he continued to work from the countryside to Seoul, then to Japan, and the United States and Europe, and he was more interested in his role as a middleman connecting different things than revealing himself.
