하종현은 1959년 홍익대학교 미술대학 회화과 졸업하고 1962년 신상회 공모전 대상을 수상하면서 화단에 등장했다. 이후 1969년 창립된 한국 아방가르드협회장으로 활약하며 실험미술의 선봉에 섰다. 그는 서울, 동경, 룩셈부르크, 뮌헨, 파리, 밀라노, 비스바덴 등 세계 주요 미술관과 갤러리에서 수차례의 개인전을 했으며, 2012년 국립현대미술관에서 대규모 회고전을 가졌다. 또한 프랑스 문화훈장, 은관문화훈장, 대한민국 미술인상 등을 수상하기도 하고, 홍익대학교 미술대학 회화과 교수로 40여 년간 재직했으며, 2001년부터 2006년까지는 서울시립미술관 관장을 역임하기도 했다. 하종현 작가의 작품을 대표하고 정의하는 한 단어는 <접합> 이다. 1975년부터 시작된 <접합> 연작은 현재까지 그의 작품세계를 대표하고 있다. 이 연작은 화면에 물감을 붓질한다는 기존 회화의 고정관념을 깨고 캔버스 뒷면에서 물감을 밀어내는 독창적인 방법으로, 추상회화의 새로운 장을 열었다는 평가를 받고 있다. 영국의 저명한 미술이론가 에드워드 루시 스미스가 "같은 경향의 서양의 작품과는 현격히 다른 세계를 구축했다" 라고 평한 바 있는데, 이와 같은 하종현 작가의 ‘배압법’은 세계 미술사에서 유례를 찾아 볼 수 없을 만큼 그 독창성을 인정받고 있다.

Jonghyun HA has been at the forefront of experimental art since 1969, when he served as the president of the Korean Avant-Garde Association. He has held numerous solo exhibitions at major museums and galleries around the world, including Seoul, Tokyo, Luxembourg, Munich, Paris, Milan, and Wiesbaden, and had a major retrospective at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in 2012. He is the recipient of the French Legion of Honor, the Order of the Silver Crown, and the Korean Art Prize. He was a professor of painting at Hongik University's College of Fine Arts for more than 40 years, and served as director of the Seoul Museum of Art from 2001 to 2006.
