현대 개념미술의 거장 마이클 크레이그 마틴은 데미안 허스트, 줄리안 무어 등 영 브리티시 아티스트 그룹(YBA)을 육성한 스승으로 전통적인 회화의 언어를 해체해 개념미술을 개척한 영국 현대미술의 아버지로 평가된다. 대영제국의 훈장인 CBS(Commander of the British Empire)를 받을 정도로 영국 현대미술의 발전에 큰 공헌을 한 것으로 공공연히 인정받았다. 마이클 크레이그 마틴의 작업은 예술의 본질에 대한 질문에서 시작되었다. 그가 예일대학교에 재학했을 당시 1960년대 성행했던 미술사의 일환인 다다이즘, 미니멀리즘, 팝 아트와 같은 현대미술사를 두루 섭렵했으며 마르셀 뒤샹과 같은 혁명적인 철학에 영향을 받아 사물과 이미지 사이의 관계를 탐구하는 데 몰두해왔다. 1970년대부터 80년대까지 런던 골드스미스 대학 교수로 재직하며 현재 영국 현대미술의 중추적 역할을 맡고 있는 데미안 허스트, 줄리안 오피, 트레이시 에민 등 YBA 작가들을 키우고 배출했다. 그는 일상의 사물을 들여다보고 주변의 평범한 물건의 성질을 이해하는 것이 삶의 본질에 더 가깝다고 생각했다. 삶 속 물건들이 없다면 우리의 일상 자체가 흔들릴 수 있다는 것을 작품을 통해 미학적으로 표현한다. 어렵고 무거운 주제 보다는 평범하고 쉽게 접할 수 있는 것들이 그의 작품의 대상이 된다.

A master of contemporary conceptual art, Michael Craig Martin is considered the father of British contemporary art, having nurtured the Young British Artists (YBA), including Damien Hirst and Julian Moore, and pioneered conceptual art by deconstructing the traditional language of painting. He was publicly recognized for his significant contribution to the development of British contemporary art by being awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBS). Martin's work was born out of questions about the nature of art. While attending Yale University, he studied modern art movements such as Dadaism, Minimalism, and Pop Art, all of which were part of the art history of the 1960s, and was influenced by revolutionary philosophers such as Marcel Duchamp to explore the relationship between objects and images. As a professor at Goldsmiths College, London in the 1970s and 80s, he nurtured and produced YBA artists such as Damien Hirst, Julian Opie, and Tracey Emin, who are now pivotal figures in British contemporary art. He believes that looking at everyday objects and understanding the nature of ordinary objects around us is closer to the essence of life, and he aesthetically expresses through his works that without them, our daily life itself would be shaken. Rather than difficult and heavy subjects, ordinary and easily accessible things become the subject of his works.
