60여년간 수묵화를 탐구해온 목정 방의걸 화백은 홍익대학교 미술대학 회화과를 졸업하고 40여 년간 전남대학교 예술대학 미술과 교수로 재직하며 후학을 양성했다. 목정의 수묵 담채는 한국화는 고답적이라는 기존의 인식을 벗어나 오히려 현대미술의 궤도에 진입했다는 평을 듣고 있다. 전통적 기법에 현대성이 가미된 수묵의 세계를 유감없이 보이기 때문에 사의적인 관념 산수보다는 새 시대의 산수화풍 창조에 예술의 지향점을 삼으며 기로에 선 한국화의 위상을 다시금 공고히 하는데 큰 의미를 보태고 있다. 방의걸 화백의 그림을 멀리서 보면 고요한 듯하지만, 가까이서 보면 힘차고 거친 선, 공간을 나누는 단호한 붓질, 먹이 한데 어울려 만들어진 묵직한 중압감, 먹이 부서지는 파편 등이 어우러져 있다. 방의걸 화백의 그림을 보고 있으면 먹이 단순한 검정이 아닌 다양한 빛깔과 질감을 줄 수 있다는 것을 실감하게 한다. 방의걸 화백은 지난 해 디스트릭트와의 협업으로 제주에 자리한 아르떼 뮤지엄에서 대형 기획전을 진행하며 세간의 주목을 받았으며, 현대적 스펙터클을 보여주며 세대를 뛰어넘었다는 호평을 받은 바 있다.

BANG Uigel has been exploring ink-and-wash painting for more than 60 years, graduating from Hongik University College of Fine Arts, Department of Painting, and training postgraduates as a professor at Chonnam National University College of Fine Arts for more than 40 years. His ink paintings are said to have escaped the conventional perception that Korean painting is old-fashioned and instead entered the orbit of contemporary art. As he shows the world of ink with modernity added to the traditional technique, it is of great significance to consolidate the status of Korean painting, which is at a crossroads, with the aim of creating a new era of sans-souci style of art rather than sans-souci of ideas. When you look at BANG Uigeol's paintings from a distance, they seem tranquil, but when you look at them up closely, they are filled with strong, rough lines, firm brushstrokes that divide the space, a sense of heavy pressure created by the prey as a whole, and fragments of the prey that break apart. His paintings make you realise that ink is not just black, but can be given a variety of colours and textures. Last year, in collaboration with District, the artist held a large-scale exhibition at the Arte Museum in Jeju, Korea, which attracted widespread attention and received acclaim across generations for its contemporary spectacle.
