ARTIST STATEMENT

아일랜드를 기반으로 활동하고 있는 미셸 하튼 (b.1983) 은 세계 각지를 여행하고 생활하며 접한 풍경과 오랜 구전 동화, 그리고 민화를 작가만의 시각으로 재해석하고 새로운 세대에 전승하는 데에 관심이 많다. 추상적인 형상과 아름다운 색의 조화로 어우러진 미셸의 작품은 바라보는 이로 하여금 작가가 만든 신비로운 꿈의 세계 속을 거닐며 내면의 안정을 되찾고 에너지를 충전할 수 있도록 한다. 특히 지난해 스타트 아트페어 서울 2022를 통해 한국에서 처음 선보인 오스카 와일드의 동화를 기반으로 한 연작들은 많은 호평과 관심을 받은 바 있다. 몇 해 전 다시 집어든 오스카 와일드 동화의 평범하지만은 않지만 깊이 있는 이야기들과 ‘예술이란 아름다움을 통해 더 나은 현실을 만들려는 꿈’ 이라는 오스카 와일드의 예술관 역시 작업 방식과 주제 등 많은 부분에서 작가에게 영향을 주었다. 지난 7월 미셸 하튼의 첫 서울 개인전에서는 작가의 주요 연작 ‘Land of Gemini’ 와 이번 한국 전시를 위해 특별히 작업한 ’Korean Folklore’ 연작을 선보이며 주한아일랜드대사관에 작품이 소장되는 등 성공적인 한국 활동의 시작을 이어, 다양한 단체전 참여와 최근 그랜드 인터컨티넨탈 서울 파르나스의 아트칵테일 콜라보레이션 작업을 진행하며 오는 9월 부산에서의 전시를 앞두고 있다.

Based in Ireland, Michelle Hatton (b.1983) is interested in reinterpreting the landscapes and old tales and folklore she has encountered while travelling and living around the world and passing them on to new generations. Combining abstract shapes and beautiful colour harmonies, Michelle's works allow the viewer to stroll through a mysterious dream world created by the artist, regaining inner peace and recharging their energy. In particular, the series of works based on Oscar Wilde's fairy tales, which were first shown in Korea at Start Art Fair Seoul 2022 last year, have received much praise and attention. The unconventional but deep stories of Oscar Wilde's fairy tales, which he picked up again a few years ago, and Oscar Wilde's view of art as a dream to create a better reality through beauty, have influenced the artist in many ways, including the way he works and the subject matter. Michelle Harton's first solo exhibition in Seoul in July showcased her major series 'Land of Gemini' and 'Korean Folklore', a series of works created especially for this exhibition, and led to a successful start to her activities in Korea, with works being acquired by the Irish Embassy in Seoul, followed by participation in various group exhibitions and a recent Art Cocktail Collaboration with Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas, leading up to her exhibition in Busan in September.
