김병종은 대한민국을 대표하는 토착 화가 중 한 사람으로 동양과 서양, 전통과 현대를 아우르는 독자적 화풍으로 알려져 있다. 1953년 전라북도 남원시에서 태어났으며 1974년 서울대학교 미술대학 회화과와 동 대학원을 졸업했다. 1979년 전국대학미전에서 대통령상을 수상했으며, 1980년 《동아일보》와 《중앙일보》 신춘문예에서 미술평론과 희곡 부문에 당선되어 등단했다. 석사 과정 이후인 1983년부터 모교에서 강의를 시작했고, 1985년에 서울대학교 동양화과의 교수로 부임한 뒤 2001년에는 미술대학장과 서울대학교 미술관장, 조형연구소장으로 임명되었다. 1992년~2001년에는 성균관대학교에서 동양철학 박사학위를 취득했다. 2018년 36년간 봉직한 서울대학교 퇴임식에서 예술계 대학교수로서는 이례적으로 대표 연설을 했으며 이후 서울대학교 명예교수 및 가천대학교 석좌교수로 있다. 김병종은 민족적 자의식과 한국화 고유의 정신을 유지하면서도 현대적 표현으로 매체를 넘나들어 한국화의 현대화 및 세계화를 이끌고 있다고 평가받는다. 꽃과 나무, 예수의 초상, 여행지의 풍경, 어린 시절의 기억과 바람에 날리는 송홧가루와 대나무 숲의 풍경까지 다양한 주제로 자유롭고 역동적이며 거침없는 표현을 구사한다. 그는 평생 생명을 주제로 작업하여 '생명 작가'로 불리며 자연을 주제로 한 여러 작품들을 통해 분출하는 생명력과 시적 아름다움을 다채롭게 보여준다.

Kim Byung Jong is one of the Republic of Korea leading indigenous painters and is known for his unique style of painting that encompasses East and West, tradition and modernity. He was born in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do in 1953 and graduated from the Department of Painting and the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Seoul National University in 1974. In 1979, he won the Presidential Award at the National University Art Exhibition, and in 1980, he was elected to the annual spring literary contest of the Dong-A Ilbo and JoongAng Ilbo in the categories of art criticism and playwriting. After his master's program, he began teaching at his alma mater in 1983, and in 1985, he became a professor in the Department of Oriental Painting at Seoul National University, and in 2001, he was appointed dean of the College of Fine Arts, director of the Seoul National University Museum of Art, and director of the Institute of Sculpture. From 1992 to 2001, he earned a doctorate in Oriental philosophy at Sungkyunkwan University. In 2018, after 36 years of service at Seoul National University, he delivered a speech at the university's retirement ceremony, a rare feat for an art professor, and has since become an honorary professor at Seoul National University and a distinguished professor at Gacheon University. Kim is considered to be leading the modernization and globalization of Korean painting by crossing mediums with contemporary expressions while maintaining national consciousness and the unique spirit of Korean painting. His subjects range from flowers and trees, portraits of Jesus, landscapes of travel destinations, childhood memories, and landscapes of pine needles and bamboo forests blowing in the wind. He is called a "life artist" because he has been working on the theme of life all his life, and his works on the theme of nature are colorful and full of vitality and poetic beauty.
