채성필은 서울대학교 동양화과와 동 대학원 졸업 후, 2003년 도불하여 현재까지 파리를 중심으로 활동하고 있으며, 동양화의 전통 기법과 서양 미술의 조형 어법을 접목하는 실험을 통해 일찍이 유럽 화단의 주목을 받았고, 현재 뉴욕, 두바이 등 세계 주요 도시에서 개인전을 개최하며 활동 영역을 넓히고 있다. 작가는 인류 보편의 주제인 자연, 그 중에서도 흙을 주 소재로 하는 작업으로 지리나 문화의 차이를 초월하려는 시도를 이어왔다. 학창 시정 고향과 어머니에 대한 향수를 담는 재로로써 흙을 다루기 시작한 채성필은 만물의 근본 물질을 설명하는 서양의 ‘4원소설’ 과 동양의 ‘오행설’ 이 모두 흙을 포함한다는 점에 주목했고, 흙을 통해 본질을 탐구하는 방향으로 작업을 발전시켰다. 주로 진주를 곱게 간 은분을 캔버스에 수차례 칠하고, 그 위에 진흙이나 먹 등을 정제해 만든 천연 안료를 뿌린 뒤 흐르게 하는 방식으로 추상적인 화면을 완성한다.

After graduating from Seoul National University's Department of Oriental Painting and the same graduate school, Sungpil CHAE arrived in 2003 and has been based in Paris ever since. Through his experiments in combining the traditional techniques of Oriental painting with the sculptural language of Western art, Chae early attracted the attention of European galleries and is now expanding his activities by holding solo exhibitions in major cities around the world, including New York and Dubai. The artist has been attempting to transcend geographical and cultural differences through her works based on the universal theme of nature, especially earth. Sungpil CHAE, who began to work with soil as an ash to contain nostalgia for her hometown and her mother, noted that both the Western 'Four Elements Novel' and the Eastern 'Five Elements Theory', which describe the fundamental substance of all things, include soil, and developed her work in the direction of exploring essence through soil. He creates his abstract paintings by applying several coats of finely ground silver pearls to the canvas, then sprinkling natural pigments made from refined mud or ink on top and letting them flow.
