Bernard Buffet was born in Paris in 1928 and lived and worked in France for most of his life. He is best known for his expressionist paintings, but he was also a skilled creator of lithographs, prints, sculptures, book illustrations, and set design. The melancholic expressionist tone of his work is often compared to the painters Francis Gruber and Georges Henri Rouault.
